As a heating engineer, answering common questions about boiler care is part and parcel of the job. That’s why we’ve put together this quick set of FAQs for the queries we know are most often asked about central heating systems.
Do you want to refresh your memory about a topic that can slip your mind? Could you use some straightforward answers to point customers in the right direction? Then we’ve got just the list for you.
Our FAQs cover topics including how often a boiler needs to be serviced, when they should be replaced, and the best locations for siting a boiler.
How Often Does a Boiler Need to be Serviced?
We always advise customers that they should have their boiler serviced every year. The first reason is that the service includes safety checks that help make sure the boiler isn’t leaking gas or carbon monoxide.
A service will also make sure their boiler is working to the best of its ability, which means using less fuel and keeping customers’ utility bills down. This will also have a positive impact on the environment, which is a big plus for many people.
Finally, an annual boiler service will help protect their warranty, which could mean big savings if the appliance does eventually start having problems. At Ideal Boilers, we contact customers when their service is due and offer online boiler service booking to make this job as easy as possible.
Can You Install a Boiler in a Bathroom?
You can install a boiler in almost any room in a home, from the loft to the kitchen — as long as it meets a few key conditions. First up, there needs to be plenty of space available for servicing and maintenance to be a good option for siting a boiler.
If there is room to keep it in the bathroom, the boiler should be housed in a cupboard and have its electrical spur located outside of the room. Customers also need to be told about the importance of taking fire standards into account and following manufacturers‘ instructions around flueing and ventilation.
IEE Wiring Regulations for Siting a Boiler in a Bathroom
A boiler located in a bathroom should also be positioned so that it meets IEE Wiring Regulations, making sure there’s no risk of it being accidentally splashed with water. This means it must be at least 2.25 metres above the area inside a bath, sink or shower, and more than 0.6 metres either side of a bath or shower.
How Often Should I Replace My Boiler?
Boilers are hard-wearing appliances that are built to last, and the cost of buying and fitting a new model will always reflect that. The good news is that they can last between 15 and 20 years if they are well looked after and serviced regularly.
All good things must come to an end though, and customers will know it's time to search for a new model if they have persistent problems with their boiler or if it isn’t running efficiently. For further information, you can take a look at our page on replacing an old boiler.
How Do I Activate My Boiler’s Guarantee?
It’s important customers understand the steps to take to make sure their guarantee is activated. One thing to tick off the list is making sure the boiler is registered within 30 days, a job that’s quick and easy to complete online for all Ideal boilers.
You can also explain that you will complete a Benchmark commissioning checklist for their new boiler, telling them what it covers to help reassure them everything’s in order. Last but not least, remind them that they should have their boiler serviced every 12 months in order to help protect their warranty.
Does My New Boiler Need a Magnetic Filter?
There are many benefits to customers using a magnetic filter to keep their central heating system in good health. These accessories are a smart way to prevent a build-up of dirt and suspended black iron oxide in boilers, which can make it difficult for water to pass through and drive up running costs.
It all depends on what the customer’s budget is, but it’s always a good idea to help them understand their options. Whether it’s a filter or a handy wireless thermostat, there are plenty of ways they can make their central heating system more efficient or simpler to use.
Can I Install a Boiler Myself?
Your customers may feel like experts after you’ve gone through our list of FAQs with them. However, it’s safe to say that we’d always advise having a fully qualified, competent and experienced installer do this job.
As all heating engineers know, working with gas and boilers can be very dangerous, so it’s never worth the risk of trying to tackle this job for an average member of the public. With your knowledge, you can help them understand just how challenging these tasks are and give them a better understanding of the world of central heating.
